During an emergency situation on a large scale, amateur radio operators are required to know how to receive and pass along information quickly and accurately. The ARRL has developed a standardized method of doing so by what is called a “Radiogram” (as seen below). Amateur radio operators participating in ARES or general emergency communications utilize the National Traffic System (NTS).
WINLINK®
“When all else fails, ham radio works”
Amateur radio operators are able to communicate when all other forms of communication are down. A tool at our disposal is Winlink – Global Radio Email®. This method of communication utilizes amateur radio equipment to send messages such as an email, sms text messages, or incident forms. This form of communication is often utilized when passing traffic (or information) to resources outside of an affected area where there is no communication available.
