Dr. John C. Hurt, 73, of Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014 in Louisville. He was born in Fayetteville, WV.
Dr. Hurt was a retired materials engineer having worked at the National Science Foundation. He also had previously worked as a professor at North Carolina State University. He was a member of the Shelbyville First Baptist Church from where he assisted in the nursing home ministry as the Crestview Assisted Care Devotional Coordinator. He served the U.S. Army during the Viet Nam war. He also was a member of Shelby County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (SCARES) and enjoyed helping at the Shelby County Community Theatre. Dr. Hurt was a skilled wood-worker and photographer. He also was known for being a member of the Rutgers football team during their 1961 undefeated season as well as having a coffee named after him at the 6th & Main Coffeehouse – “The John Hurt Brew”. He was preceded in death by his parents, Quentin and Dorothy Hurt.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Debra McKinney; his sons, Thomas Hurt (Kristie) of Raleigh, NC, Nathan Crowe (Abbye) of Richmond, and Brent Crowe of Lexington; his sister, Sue Tipton (Andy) of Chattahoochee, FL; and 2 grandchildren, Carson Hurt of Raleigh, NC, and Emmett Crowe of Richmond.
